If you are unfamiliar with the name of Greg Johnson, I envy you. The man is primarily known for his pastoral role in the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America), where he introduced the concept of a “Side B Christianity.” The Side B label is given to those who would argue that being a Christian and being a homosexual are not mutually exclusive. This particular strain of thinking will argue that the specific act of sodomy is morally wrong, but will often have large gray areas of acceptable sexual behavior. Within this large gray area, they claim it is possible to be a homoromantic, or to sexually identify as a minor. Clearly, things permitted by “Side B” theology are wholly condemned by actual Christianity.
In this pdf, Greg Johnson journals his own path through these matters. He goes from noticing bad press in a LGBT+ publication, to having pastors bar tending for LGBT+ events. Like watching a roller coaster on fire, Greg’s rationale is frustrating to read. However, I think it is also an incredibly valuable insight into this truly radical thinking.
Despite totally exonerating this publicly gay pastor, the PCA still claims to be a non-affirming denomination. After reading this, I find that claim hard to believe.
